In addition to performance-based merit increases, this position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following dates:

Effective July 2, 2021 - 2.5% increase

Effective July 1, 2022 - 3.5% increase

Mandatory Employee Retirement Contributions will decrease on the following date:

Effective July 2, 2021 - 1.2% decrease

Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

This recruitment is Open to the Public and will be open for a minimum of five (5) business days and remain open on a continuous basis until 11:59 p.m. (PST) on the day the needs of the County are met. Applicants are encouraged to apply immediately.

This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current and future vacancies within the Health Care Agency. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.

Clinical Services

The Staff Nurses (Registered Nurses) assist with the investigation and treatment of reportable communicable diseases, including Tuberculosis, HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and food-borne or aerosolized illnesses to prevent the spread in the community.

Family Health

Family Health promotes the health and well-being of all infants, children, parents, and families in Orange County through service delivery and collaboration with a range of community organizations and health professionals. The Staff Nurses (Registered Nurses) provide essential support to clinic operations within the Child Health, Family Planning, Childhood Immunization and Travel Immunization Clinics.

The Staff Nurse makes independent nursing judgments while following orders from physicians or nursing supervisors and works within established nursing procedures for the assigned clinic.

Family Health Clinics

This position supports service delivery through administration of immunizations and providing medical care to Orange County residents. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Taking vital signs and obtaining complete patient history including present illness, past medical history, and family and social history
  • Teaching and counseling patients and families regarding specific diseases, health conditions, health maintenance and illness prevention
  • Utilizing the California Immunization Registry (CAIR) state registry system to accurately document immunizations
  • Assisting in providing nursing support during disease outbreaks

Communicable Disease Control

The current position provides surveillance, investigation, and reporting for enteric diseases. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating with Epidemiologists to address foodborne outbreaks
  • Assessing the need for and conducting specimen collection and analysis when patients work in sensitive occupations or otherwise require clearance
  • Tracking patient status, reporting to the Medical Director and Supervising Public Health Nurse, and conducting follow up activities as directed
  • Entering case histories and supplemental information into the State's electronic system for reporting

STD/HIV Clinic (17th Street Testing, Treatment and Care)

This position provides direct nursing services to patients seeking care in the clinic. The Staff Nurse is part of the clinic's interdisciplinary team. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performing triage and nursing assessments
  • Administering medications as ordered by physicians
  • Providing venipuncture and laboratory testing, and providing patient education
  • Performing patient specimen collection and obtaining vital signs
  • Providing patient care as well as assistance to STD/HIV clinician, while developing patient relationships
  • Utilizing an electronic health record for patient care
  • Coordinating with other Public Health clinics and community based organizations as needed for patient care

Physical Requirements

Independent body mobility to stand, walk, bend, stoop, sit for prolonged time and to drive a vehicle; strength to lift and carry up to 25 pounds; manual dexterity to reach, grasp, manipulate small objects and precision instruments to give injections, take pulse and blood pressure; manual dexterity to hand write or use computer keyboard; vision sufficient to see/read gauges, thermometers and calibrated measuring instruments, labels on medications, computer screen and to drive a vehicle; hear and speak well enough to communicate with patients at normal conversation level in person and over the phone.

Environmental Conditions

Will be required to work in clinic environment; wear protective equipment/clothing as required by protocol; and may work with patients who have a communicable disease. For Nurse-Family Partnership, work occurs primarily in the client's home. A high stress level is inherent in this position due to the nature and complexity of poverty and other psychosocial factors that impact the families served. Employees may have exposure to hazards in the field (driving, unfamiliar neighborhoods, inclement weather and clients). May be assigned to evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
