Position

Civil/Environmental Engineering Intern (Unpaid Intern)

Applications will be accepted year round on a continuous basis.

OC WASTE & RECYCLING

OC Waste & Recycling owns and operates the Orange County landfill system. The engineering group is tasked with maintaining compliance with the standards set forth by the various regulatory agencies such as the Air Quality Management District, the Regional Water Quality Control Board, Cal Recycle, Health Care Agency and the Local Enforcement Agency.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The engineering group at each landfill provides engineering support services to the ongoing landfill operations, including drainage and erosion control; site grading designs; landfill gas collection system maintenance/expansion/monitoring; renewable energy program management assistance; construction support service; groundwater sampling/monitoring; and various regulatory compliance monitoring, reporting, and remediation tasks. The engineering group at Headquarters provides regulatory and additional technical support for the landfills and prepares reports for the regulatory agencies, in addition to a variety of other regulatory and legislative functions.

INTERN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Intern duties/responsibilities include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following projects:

* Perform records search * Organize, develop and archive documents, reports and drawings that are stored as hardcopies and electronically * Perform data entry and/or analysis * Provide staff support with groundwater sampling and monitoring * Assist with field survey duties and compliance report preparation * Attend renewable energy coordination meeting and prepare meeting minutes

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must currently be enrolled in an accredited college/university and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or achieved an associate's degree in chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science or engineering (civil, environmental, solid waste). Basic understanding of math and science is required. Recent graduates who have completed their degree in one of the above fields are also eligible to apply.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

* Ability to calculate area, volume and density * Basic understanding of math and science in fields related to trigonometry, geometry, physics, chemistry, etc. * Proficient in verbal communication/presentation and English writing skills * Strong organization, problem solving and analytical skills * Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite 2016 * Knowledge of CAD and CIVIL3D is helpful, but not required * Experience in databases and graphics programs such as Photoshop * Ability to work on team projects and handle several assignments simultaneously * Physical agility for field assignments

TIME COMMITMENT

Minimum 20 - 25 hours per week for 3 or more months. A minimum of 3 months is required to obtain adequate training. Applicants able to schedule the maximum hours/duration listed for the internship typically gain a more in-depth experience.

BENEFITS AVAILABLE TO INTERN

Although this is an unpaid internship that does not lead to permanent employment or include employee benefits, the position offers a broad learning experience under the supervision of a practicing engineer within an office and/or field environment, an opportunity to apply academic skills/knowledge to the workplace, exposure to the public sector and the field of waste management, and an opportunity to gain insight into solid waste solutions available for Orange County residents.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Interns will be responsible for supplying their own clothing, boots, and sun protection appropriate for a field/office mixed work environment.

Interns may be required to drive a personnel vehicle to off-site locations. Mileage reimbursement is available for authorized travel. Interns who operate a personal vehicle as part of their duties must possess a valid state-issued driver's license and proof of auto insurance coverage for personal injuries and property damage.
